San Diego Roundup : SDSU Women to Participate in UCLA Meet

Three members of the San Diego State women’s track and field team will compete in the Pepsi Invitational meet Saturday at UCLA’s Drake Stadium.

Latanya Sheffield, Ramona Pagel and Renee Chambers-Ross will represent the Aztecs at the meet.

Sheffield, whose 56.02 time ranked her sixth among U.S. women in the 400-meter hurdles last year, will run in the hurdles. Pagel, who was last year’s NCAA champion in the shotput, will compete in the discus and shot. Chambers-Ross was invited to compete in the 400 and 800, but she has yet to choose which event she will run.

Some of the nation’s top surfers will be in Cardiff this weekend for the 91X Pro, the second stop on the Professional Surfing Assn. of American’s spring competition schedule. The meet will take place Saturday and Sunday at Seaside Reef.

Heading the field are Mike Parsons, Dave Parmenter and Mike Lambresi, who all finished high in the PSAA’s winter standings. Parmenter won the last PSAA event held at Seaside Reef.

In the women’s division, Jorja Smith, Alisa Schwarzstein and Liz Benavidez lead the way. Smith has been atop the standings since February.

Registration for the American Youth Soccer Organization will take place at five locations Saturday. Youngsters 5-18 are eligible for the league.

Sign-ups will take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Allen School in Bonita, Mt. Miguel High School in Spring Valley and the Mira Mesa Recreation Center in Mira Mesa. Between 8 a.m. and noon, sign-ups will take place at Serra High School in Tierrasanta and the Kearny Mesa Recreation Center in Linda Vista.

Mark Norris, winner of three of the first four super stock main events at Cajon Speedway this season, will head the field when racing resumes at the course Saturday night at 7:30. Norris’ competition will come from Mike Hagerman, George Esau and Ralph Dineen.
