Preps HIGHLIGHTS : Dickmann Four-Hits St. Joseph

Debbie Dickmann allowed just four hits while striking out eight as Newbury Park High defeated St. Joseph, 5-1, Tuesday in a second-round Southern Section 4-A softball playoff game at Lakewood.

The Panthers (22-6) had just four hits themselves, two by Karen Westphal. They advanced to Friday’s quarterfinals against Westminster.

Tricia McCarthy walked with the bases loaded in the second inning for Newbury’s first run. After St. Joseph tied it in the fourth, Westphal led off the sixth with a triple.

Dawn Hatmaker singled Westphal home to make it 2-1. Newbury Park then got three runs in the seventh inning, Westphal’s single scoring one and two St. Joseph errors allowing the others to score.

Viewpoint 17, Holy Family 0

Viewpoint right-hander Roxana Rafik struck out 15 and allowed only one hit to lead the Patriots to a second-round Southern Section playoff victory.

At the plate, Rafik went 4 for 4 with a double and three runs batted in, while teammate Kim Fields had a double in each of her two at-bats. Liesl Dano was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Viewpoint’s 10 hits were enhanced by six Gaels errors.

Viewpoint (20-1) will play in the third round Thursday.

Hart 2, Righetti 0

Samantha Ford allowed just one hit and struck out four to lead Hart in the second round of the Southern Section 4-A playoffs at Righetti in Lompoc.

The Indians (21-4) will play Ocean View, a 4-0 winner over St. Paul, on Thursday at 3 p.m.

Ford (8-1) also scored the first run of the game. She walked in the fourth inning and scored on a single to center by catcher Lorie Fausett.

Third baseman Evy Baltazar singled in the second run in the sixth inning. She also made six good plays in the field to frustrate the Warriors’ strategy of bunting to avoid striking out.

San Marcos 3, Thousand Oaks 1

San Marcos of Santa Barbara slipped past Thousand Oaks on three unearned runs to eliminate the Lancers in the second round of the Southern Section playoffs.

Thousand Oaks (14-10 overall) had eight hits but left 11 runners on base. Lora Detweiler went 3 for 4 to lead the Lancers.

BASEBALL

Granada Hills 5, Birmingham 4

Granada Hills High wrapped up a Mid-Valley League championship by defeating Birmingham in Van Nuys.

The Highlanders led, 5-1, going into the the fifth inning and had to fight off a late Birmingham rally for their 11th league win in 16 games.

Tony Benodos (3-2) went five innings before being relieved by Leo Clauser.

Granada Hills will meet Canoga Park in the first round of the playoffs on June 3.

North Hollywood 14, Hollywood 4

North Hollywood pounded 16 hits off Hollywood pitchers to improve its record to 12-5 in the East Valley League. Hollywood, after 17 games, is still winless.

Eight North Hollywood players hit safely to help starting pitcher Tim Driscoll record his seventh win in 11 games.

North Hollywood was behind, 1-0, going into the second inning, but Peter Straus hit a three-run homer to spark the Huskies. Straus was 3 for 5 with four runs batted in. Peter Washington hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning.

Jody Richardson was 4 for 4 with a triple and two runs batted in, while Driscoll was 3 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs.

El Camino Real 3, Canoga Park 0

El Camino Real’s Drew Ricker struck out seven and spread out six hits to blank Canoga Park on Tuesday.

Tony Schwartz and Brian Pogue each went 2 for 3. Both had a single, double and an RBI. Canoga Park’s Tony Calvert was 3 for 3, while Henry Meyers went 2 for 2.

El Camino, which had to forfeit a number of games due to ineligible player violations, improved its record to 3-12. Canoga Park dropped to 7-8.

Cleveland 5, Reseda 1

Cleveland’s Mark Bowen went 2 for 4 to stretch his hitting streak to 15 games.

Bowen is 27 for 56 this season--a .482 average. Last week he broke the school record for hits in a season. The previous record of 24 hits was set in 1982 by Bret Saberhagen. Saberhagen, who played shortstop and first base for Cleveland, now pitches for the Kansas City Royals.

Also leading Cleveland (11-4) was winning pitcher Pat Almeido (6-0), who allowed Reseda four hits. Bobby LaRosa was 3 for 3.

Reseda (7-8) was led on offense by Brian Ogle, who went 2 for 2.

Polytechnic 5, Verdugo Hills 1

Polytechnic’s bats broke loose for four hits in the fifth inning to beat visiting Verdugo Hills (7-10).

The Parrots (6-11) had a one-run lead going into the inning when, with two outs, Eddie Ordunze singled. After Ray Palafox moved Ordunze to second on a single, George Chiapa walked to load the bases.

Harbind Walia (3 for 3) then singled to drive in two runs and Raul Calzada (2 for 2) doubled to drive in two more.

Fairfax 11, Sylmar 6

After battling to a 6-6 tie, Fairfax blasted two home runs in the eighth inning to upset Sylmar. The Lions had 16 hits in the game and were helped by five Sylmar errors.

Ricki Diaz went 3 for 3 to lead the Spartans to defeat. It was only the second loss for pitcher Biff McGahan in seven outings.

Because of the loss, Sylmar (12-6) dropped to third place in the East Valley League behind North Hollywood (12-4). Fairfax is now 9-8 and remains in fourth.
