Southern Section Softball : Oakley Pitches Ocean View to Win Over St. Paul With a Two-Hitter

Jackie Oakley threw a two-hitter and improved her record to 28-0 as the Ocean View High School softball team defeated St. Paul, 4-0, in a Southern Section 4-A playoff game at St. Paul on Tuesday.

Oakley struck out 10 and walked only one as the Seahawks’ seven-hit attack was more than enough to overcome the Swordsmen. The Ocean View scored one in the first inning, two in the fifth and one in the seventh to cruise to the shutout.

With the win, Ocean View improved its record to 29-0 and will advance to Thursday’s quarterfinals.

In other 4-A softball action:

Edison 1, Kennedy 0--Dena Baker singled in the only run of the game in the third inning at Edison to give the Chargers the victory. Edison (25-9) is a wild-card entry in the playoffs while Kennedy was the second-ranked team in the 4-A. Edison will advance to Thursday’s quarterfinals. Julie Carpenter (20-8) picked up the win.

Westminster 5, Villa Park 0--The Lions scored all five of their runs in the sixth inning at Villa Park for the win. Debbie DeJohn threw a one-hitter and went 2 for 3 at the plate. Candy Roman also went 2 for 3 with one RBI. Westminster (21-9) advances to Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Cypress 2, Long Beach Wilson 1--The Centurions scored their two runs on passed balls in the fifth inning and then hung on to beat the Bruins at Cypress. Nicky Luce struck out 13 in improving her record, and the Centurions record, to 24-5-1. Cypress advances to play Burroughs of Burbank in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
