Area Roundup : Allen Will Be Guest Speaker at Irvine Banquet

George Allen, former Los Angeles Ram and Washington Redskin football coach, will be the guest speaker Friday, May 31, at the 12th Irvine Sports Awards Banquet in the Airporter Inn at Irvine.

Allen, who now serves as the President’s adviser on health and fitness, will help honor the top senior scholar-athletes from Irvine’s three high schools--Irvine, University and Woodbridge. The event is sponsored by the Exchange Club of Irvine.

A no-host cocktail reception begins at 6:30 p.m. with dinner beginning at 7. Tickets, at $25 per person or $250 per corporate table, can be reserved by calling Bill Howard at 476-1084.

UC Irvine shortstop Adam Ging has been named to the Academic All-America first team by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Ging, a junior from Malibu, had a 3.5 grade-point average in political science. He hit .355 this season with 10 doubles, 7 triples, 3 home runs and 39 RBIs. Ging was named to the Academic All-America second team last season.

The 24th Annual Adoption Guild Doubles Tennis Tournament will begin Saturday and run through June 2. Elimination matches during the Memorial Day weekend will be played at seven tennis clubs: Balboa Bay Club, John Wayne Tennis Club, Newport Beach Tennis Club, Racquet Club of Irvine and Palisade Tennis Club.

Four swimmers from the Mission Viejo Nadadores will compete in an international swim meet in Monaco Saturday and Sunday. Kim Brown, Tiffany Cohen, Mike O’Brien and Dan Jorgenson were selected after their high-point performances at the United States short-course swimming championships in April.

Cohen won gold medals at the 1984 summer Olympics in the women’s 400- and 800-meter freestyle. O’Brien won a gold medal in the men’s 1,500 freestyle.

The Irvine Boys-Girls Club will play host to a two-week instructional basketball camp this summer for boys entering grades five through eight.

Bill Reynolds, head basketball Coach at Southern California College will direct the camp. Reynolds has compiled an 87-35 record in four years at SCC. He was named the NAIA Area 1 Coach of the Year.

The camp will be limited to a maximum of 32 boys in each age group. The camp runs from July 1-12. The fee is $60, including a sports travel bag, basketball T-shirt and daily refreshments. Camp sessions will be from 8-10 a.m. for seventh and eighth graders, and 10:15 to 12:15 for fifth and sixth graders.

Entries are being accepted for the second Vince Ferragamo-Special Olympics Celebrity Golf Tournament. The tournament will be Monday, June 4, with a noon start at the Los Alamitos Navy Base Golf Course.

Players will be limited to the first 144 registrations received. Entry fee is $175, and is tax deductable. All proceeds will go to California Special Olympics for mentally handicapped athletes.

Celebrities joining Ferragamo include Jack Youngblood, Carlos Palomino and Evel Knievel.

More than 100 professional and amateur jet ski racers are scheduled to compete in the $5,000 Western Jet Ski Nationals beginning Saturday at the Long Beach Marine Stadium.

Four divisions of racers--pro, expert, women and novice--will be divided into 10 classes of competition in closed-course, slalom and freestyle events during the two days of competition.

Closed-course racing is set on a buoy-marked course featuring several turns and an open water jump. Slalom racing is a timed event through a zig-zag course and the freestyle event is designed to show skill and riding expertise with the riders performing a series of mandatory and creative maneuvers.

Six-time champion Larry Rippenkroeger, 28, of Sacramento is the favorite to win the event and is the defending 1984 world champion.

Qualifying and novice finals are scheduled for Saturday with the professional and expert finals set for Monday. Racing begins both Saturday and Monday at 10:30 a.m.
