El Camino Real Parents’ Appeal of 5 Baseball Forfeits Rejected

The City Section Interscholastic Athletics Committee voted Tuesday, 11-8, to uphold the rule that forced El Camino Real’s baseball team to forfeit five league victories because of an ineligible player.

Sophomore Sean Davis had played on an outside league during El Camino’s season, in violation of state rules. The Conquistadores had to give up five victories, falling from second to last in league.

A group of El Camino parents filed an appeal with City assistant superintendent Paul Godfrey to reverse the ruling. Last Thursday, Godfrey granted the parents an opportunity to appeal at a special Tuesday meeting of the committee.

“We decided that we would stay with the rules and the games would be forfeited and the student ruled ineligible for the remainder of the season,” City Commissioner Jim Cheffers said.

Had the appeal been successful, El Camino would have reached the playoffs as the third-place team in the West Valley League.
