Cerritos College scored five runs in the first inning Wednesday and went on to rout College of the Canyons, 14-3, in the championship game of the State Community College baseball tournament.

A crowd of 600 at Cal State Fullerton saw the Falcons (39-5) load the bases against losing pitcher Frank Halcovich with two out in the first. Quinn Mack followed with a single to left field, giving Cerritos a 2-0 lead. Halcovich (8-5) then hit Tony Trevino with a pitch to reload the bases for Ever Magallanes, who hit a slicing drive to left center for a three-run triple.

That was more than enough offense for Cerritos’ John Rodriguez, who pitched a six-hitter and improved his record to 8-1.

The win gave Cerritos its seventh State title and capped a near-perfect season for first-year Coach George Horton. Earlier, the Falcons had won the championship of the South Coast Conference by six games.

Wednesday’s game had originally been scheduled Sunday at Fresno, but was rained out.
