San Diego Roundup : Hembera Named Football Coach at San Diego High

Steve Hembera has been named the new head football coach at San Diego High School.

Hembera, 36, has been an assistant football coach and head wrestling coach at San Diego the past eight years. Hembera is a graduate of Crawford High and San Diego State.

The third destruction derby of 1985 will highlight the weekly racing card at 7:30 Saturday night at Cajon Speedway. Rodney Shaw won the first destruction derby in April and Jim Hamilton and Bill Fields tied for first last month.

In stock car competition, Mark Norris will attempt to win his fifth main event of the season. Mike Carver leads the pro stock division.

The San Diego Chapter of the National Football League Alumni will host its fourth annual golf tournament at noon Monday at Singing Hills Country Club. Team captains for the tournament include Bob Babich, Clem Daniels, Ben Davidson, Tom Harmon, Jack Patera, Myron Pottios and George Struger.

Proceeds will benefit the Children’s Home Society.

The fourth annual Dennis James “Swing From the Heart” celebrity pro/am golf tournament will be Thursday and Friday at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. Contestants include Claude Akins, Jack Carter, Monty Hall, Leslie Neilsen and Elgin Baylor.

Proceeds will benefit the Palomar Pomerado Cardiac Rehabilitation Program.

The Ancient Mariners Sailing Society will sponsor a regatta at noon Saturday off Harbor Island. The San Diego to Maui boat race will begin at noon Sunday at Shelter Island.

The Pacific Power Boat Club will sponsor races all day Saturday and Sunday at Ski Beach on Mission Bay.

The Kensington Optimist Club will have its third annual Spring Cup soccer tournament at 8:30 Saturday and Sunday mornings at the La Jolla Youth Field, 3908 Torrey Pines Rd.
