Temperatures Ease but Heat Wave Continues
It wasn’t quite so hot today in most parts of Southern California, but the heat wave was still rolling sweatily along. The slight decline in temperatures was small comfort to firefighters, who continued their efforts to battle wildfires that have burned over 30,000 acres since last weekend.
The latest blaze broke out in the brushy hills above the Hollywood Bowl about 11 a.m., but Los Angeles Fire Department crews controlled it by noon after it had burned three to five acres.
There were no reported injuries or damage.
Temperatures were running about 5 degrees lower throughout the Southland today, according to the National Weather Service, but most thermometers were expected to peak at over the 100 mark.
The temperature at 1 p.m. in downtown Los Angeles hit 99. It was 106 at 1 p.m. Monday, and eventually the mercury rose to an all-time record for July 1 of 107.
