Princess Diana boogied with her husband, Prince Charles, in front of more than 8,000 people to raise an extra $655 for a charity that helps young people.

Her impromptu dance took place in the middle of a concert Thursday night by the rock group Dire Straits at north London’s Wembley Arena.

During the concert, many in the audience began dancing in the aisles. When police tried to restrain them, the group’s leader, Mark Knopfler, said, “Heavy security; let the people boogie.”

Then he said, “If everyone stands up and boogies, and I mean everyone, then I’ll take my clothes off.”

Removing his jacket, he added, “I’ve been promised 500 pounds ($655) for the Prince’s Trust,” a charity that lists Charles as president.

Prince Charles was among the first to stand and Diana was not far behind him.

The 36-year-old prince, a classical music buff, bobbed and clapped in time to the rhythm.

But Diana, an avid rock music fan who celebrated her 24th birthday July 1, danced with abandon in a rare public moment of letting her hair down.

“Well, we won; didn’t we,” Knopfler said as the music ended.

Diana returned laughing to her seat.

The 2 1/2-hour concert raised 55,500 pounds ($72,705) for the Prince’s Trust.
