Three Valley Swimmers Selected High School All-Americans

Three Valley swimmers have been named to the National High School All-America Swim Team selected by the National Scholastic Coaches Association.

The 45 individuals with the nation’s fastest times in each event are chosen for the squad.

Ron Kemp of Thousand Oaks made the team for the third consecutive year in the 200 individual medley. His time of 1:52.25 was seventh best in the country. His time of 51.97 in the 100 backstroke placed him 10th and also qualified him for the team.

Kemp was the Southern Section 4-A Division champion in both events. He will attend UCLA on an athletic scholarship this fall.

Mike Hlinka, also from Thousand Oaks, was selected to the team for the first time. His time of 4:35.32 placed him 31st in the 500 freestyle.

El Camino Real, the City Section champion, had one swimmer on the team. Junior Bob Balldocchi was eighth in the 100 free with a time of 45.83 seconds, and 27th in the 50 free at 21.27.

Robinson Gears Up for Stock Car Race

Winston West point leader Jim Robinson of Reseda will battle for his second win and more than $25,000 in prize money at the Off Broadway Restaurant 150 stock-car race in Coeur D’Alene, Ida., Sunday.

Also going for the checkered flag will be Glen Steurer of Simi Valley, Bob Kennedy of Thousand Oaks, Pat Mintey of Saugus, and Jim Insolo of Mission Hills.

Insolo won the race in 1974, which was the last time NASCAR held a race at the quarter-mile oval track.

Robinson will try to widen his Winston West lead against Jim Bown of Portland, Ore. Bown, who is in second place, won the G.I. Joe’s/Valvoline 201 on Thursday in Portland.

Polee to Play in Japan’s World Games

Dwayne Polee, a senior guard at Pepperdine University, will represent the United States later this month at the World University Games in Kobe, Japan.

Polee, the West Coast Athletic Conference’s 1985 player of the year, averaged 15.7 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists a game last season.

South Florida’s Lee Rose will coach the U.S. team, which will be headed by St. John’s senior forward Walter Berry.

Portable Pools for Recreation

The Los Angeles Unified School District’s Youth Services Section will help youths keep cool this summer with portable swimming pools at six Valley locations beginning Monday.

The summer recreation swim program also features qualified instructors, emphasizing essential water safety skills and swimming fundamentals.

Lessons are free, and those interested may register on the first day of classes.

Tourney to Benefit Burn Foundation

The Calabasas Park Tennis Club will play host to the West Valley Pro/Celebrity Tennis Exhibition July 14, with all proceeds benefiting the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation in Canoga Park.

Participants will include Vince Van Patten, Jeff Klaparda and several KABC personalities. Door prizes will be featured.
