Harvard High’s Leo Marks, 14, who recently placed third in the 800 meters at The Athletic Congress’ nationals, won the 800 meter event at the Track City International Classic at the University of Oregon at Eugene, Sunday. Marks, a member of the Super Sonic Track Club, took first place in the event with a time of 2:05.7.

Louie Garcia, the golf professional at Camarillo Springs, carded an 8-under-par 63 last week on the championship tees at Camarillo Springs to break the old course record (which was his) of 65. . . . Two aces recently: At Las Posas Country Club, Gerald Scott of Camarillo holed out his tee-shot at the 131-yard 11th hole. It was Scott’s first ace. Marilyn Sprague of Ventura used a driver to ace the 136-yard ninth hole at Saticoy Country Club.

Phil Neri, former Notre Dame High football coach, has taken a scouting job with the Seattle Seahawks. Neri, 34, recently resigned from a seven-year scouting position with the Philadelphia Eagles.

For two straight Sundays, funny car driver Tim Grose of Saugus has made it to the finals of a major race--and lost.

First, it was the IHRA Northern Nationals in Milan, Michigan on July 7, where Grose lost to Dale Pulde of Granada Hills. Last Sunday, it was to NHRA point leader Kenny Bernstein of Dallas in the NHRA Summer Nationals in Englishtown, N.J.

Grose’s car, at 250.53 m.p.h., was faster than Bernstein’s at 249.58. However, Bernstein--the day’s top qualifyer--had an elasped time of 5.77 seconds, compared to 5.80 seconds posted by Grose.

After qualifying fifth, Pulde smoked his tires in the second round in 8.27 seconds. The loss was against Bernstein (5.85).

John Lombardo of Newhall, who qualified 16th (5.97, 239.48), went out in the first round against Rick Johnson. Don Prudhomme of Northridge was also defeated in the first round by John Force of Fullerton. Prudhomme had qualified 11th.

With the win, Bernstein strengthened his hold on his NHRA point lead. Lombardo is third, followed by Pulde at fourth. Prudhomme is sixth and Grose is 14th.
