Local News in Brief : 2 Valley Students Win National Merit Awards

Two San Fernando Valley students have won Merit Scholarships for scoring in the top 0.05% of California’s senior high school class, the National Merit Scholarship Corp. has announced.

Sharon Hopkins of Reseda, who plans a career in law, has been awarded the Pomona College Merit Scholarship. She attended Reseda High School and was editor of her school paper.

Daniel M. O’Leary of Tarzana has won the University of California, San Diego Merit Scholarship. O’Leary was captain of the varsity baseball team and also played varsity basketball and football at Harvard School in Studio City.

National Merit Scholarships range from $250 to $2,000. The two Valley winners were awarded merit scholarships by the schools they plan to attend, and must be enrolled at those schools in order to receive the scholarships.
