Federal Aid for Fire Victims

Share

President Reagan has authorized the Federal Emergency Management Agency to provide aid to victims of the Normal Heights fire, as well as the victims of other recent blazes that scarred six other California counties, a congressman’s aide said Thursday.

Federal funds also will be released to help fire victims in the counties of Los Angeles, Ventura, San Luis Obispo, Monterey, Santa Cruz and Santa Clara, said Tina Kreisher, an aide to Rep. Bill Lowery (R-San Diego).

The federal disaster aid agency is expected to open a field office in San Diego within two weeks. The Normal Heights blaze destroyed 64 homes and caused an estimated $8.9 million in damage.

The disaster relief fund will provide financial assistance for fire victims who are uninsured or underinsured, and low-interest Small Business Administration loans for burned-out businesses. Temporary shelter and unemployment relief also may be available for those who qualify under the program.
