FIRST IMPRESSIONS: There are two things to rejoice about in the new Upstage Cafe in the Wiltern Building, (3750 Wilshire Blvd., 213/739-9913). The first is that there is now a restaurant in this grand old building that was saved from demolition at the last minute. The second is that despite its proximity to the theater, (now being run by Bill Graham Presents), the restaurant offers very generous portions at reasonable prices.

Unfortunately the food itself is nothing to shout about. The Greek inspired menu offers the usual-- spanakopita, saganaki, moussaka, gyros--a s well as hamburgers, salads, sandwiches and desserts. There’s a nice salad bar, extremely pleasant service and a modest, airy, attractive atmosphere. And while it might be nice if the green beans they served were a little bit greener, the Upstage Cafe is a real contender for your dinner dollar before or after a performance at this landmark location.
