Fatih, a multiple-stakes winner in training for Sunday’s Arlington Million at Arlington Park near Chicago, broke an ankle during a workout Wednesday and probably will be retired.
Trainer Hector Palma said that Fatih was clocked in 1:00 2/5 in his final five-furlong workout on the turf at Del Mar Wednesday morning, then pulled up lame.
“I called the vet (and) had him X-rayed,” Palma said, “and there was a fracture on the outside of his right ankle.
“It was so sad. Everything was prepared for Chicago.”
Fatih won the Arcadia Handicap and Golden Gate Handicap last spring. In 38 career starts, he won 10 times, with five seconds and four thirds, earning $419,309.
