A U.S. Air Force pilot was killed and another flier was injured when their jet crashed into the Mojave Desert during a training mission. The F4-E Phantom crashed at the remote Leach Lake bombing and gunnery range on the Ft. Irwin Military Reservation, authorities said. The pilot, who went down with the plane, was Maj. James M. Bryant, 36, of Victorville, the Air Force said. The officer who ejected, Lt. Paul A. White of Central Point, Ore., sustained minor injuries. The jet was based at George Air Force base.
