Campbell Scores Seven as Irvine Wins Twice

Jeff Campbell scored seven goals to lead the UC Irvine water polo team to two first-round victories in the UCI Water Polo Tournament at Irvine’s Heritage Park.
Campbell scored five goals in the first game, a 13-9 win over Loyola of Chicago. In that game, the teams played to a 3-3 tie in the first period. The Anteaters outscored the Ramblers, 3-1, in the second period and 4-1 in the third.
J.R. Salvatore and Juian Harvey each had two goals for the Anteaters in the Loyola game. Anteater goalie Mark Maizel had 10 saves.
In the Anteaters’ second game, a 15-4 win over Cal State Fullerton, Campbell scored two more goals. Dean Crow was UCI’s leading scorer with three goals in that game.
Fullerton was routed, 17-4, by UC Berkeley in the Titans’ first game. Twelve Golden Bear players scored.
In the closest game of the round, Cal State Long Beach scored first in a sudden-death period to defeat Fresno State, 7-6. The score was tied, 5-5, after regulation play. Neither team scored in the first overtime and each had a goal in the second, thus forcing the sudden death period.
In other games, Pacific defeated Pepperdine, 10-5; USC defeated the University of San Diego, 14-6; Stanford defeated USC ‘B’, 12-7; UCLA defeated Claremont-Mudd, 14-4; Stanford defeated Pacific, 12-5 and UC Berkeley defeated Loyola of Chicago, 9-5.
