Reseda High defeated Birmingham, 15-7, at Birmingham Friday night.

After the opening kickoff, Birmingham drove 75 yards to a score, mostly on the running of Braves’ tailback Mike Flores. Flores accounted for 53 of the yards on his own.

Birmingham’s defense kept Reseda’s offense in check until early in the second quarter when reserve quarterback Daryl Mickens entered the game after starter Scott Schaeffer was injured.

Mickens took over at the Birmingham 46. He completed 3 of 3 passes during an eight-play drive to the 20. The Regents’ drive, however, stalled at the 20, but kicker Robert Loomis booted a 30-yard field goal to make the score, 7-3, with 5:15 remaining in the first half.

Reseda’s defense forced Birmingham to punt after three plays. Tony Gilmore returned the punt to Reseda’s 46. A 15-yard personal foul against Birmingham advanced the ball to the 39.

After driving to the 17, Mickens then hit Rod Wells, who was standing in the end zone with 10 seconds remaining in the half. The extra point attempt by Loomis failed. Reseda led, 9-7, at the half.

To open the second half, Reseda drove 70 yards and the drive was capped by Mickens’ 1-yard run for the score. Reseda led 15-7.

Reseda could have iced the game, but their mistakes kept the Braves in the game. Two Reseda drives were killed--the first when a Mickens’ pass was picked off, and then later when Mickens fumbled. The Braves, though, were unable to capitalize.

Mickens finished the game completing 7 of 13 for 89 yards.

Birmingham quarterback Kevin Zeitz competed only 7 of 21 passes for 108 yards.
