WFC ROUNDUP : Hayward St. Hands SLO 28-17 Loss

Defensive back Walter Washington returned an interception 52 yards for a touchdown and teammate Eric Houston blocked a punt to set up another score in Hayward State’s non-conference victory over Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo at Hayward, Calif.

Houston, a defensive lineman, recorded three quarterback sacks in addition to his key block with 10:17 remaining in the contest. It set up quarterback Bill Neal’s 1-yard touchdown plunge, which gave Hayward (2-0) a 21-17 lead with 8:52 left in the game.

Wide receiver Clark Sorenson led Cal Poly (1-1) with nine catches for 131 yards.

Sacramento State 63, Sonoma State 10--Freshman running back Donald Hair rushed for three touchdowns, quarterback Greg Knapp passed for two more and an aggressive Sacramento State defense forced six turnovers to lead the Hornets to 63-10, non-conference victory over Sonoma State at Rohnert Park, Calif.

Knapp, a senior, completed eight of nine passes for 114 yards and also ran for a touchdown. Tailback Mark Schutz gained 92 yards on nine carries with one TD and Hair added 83 yards on eight carries.

The Cossacks scored their only points on an eight-yard run by tailback Stacy Dedrick in the second quarter and a school record 50-yard field goal by Dennis Hochman in the third quarter.

Weber State 45, Portland State 24--Willie McDonald ran for three touchdowns and Darryl Pollard intercepted two fourth-quarter passes to power host Weber State’s non-conference triumph at Ogden, Utah.

Portland State took a short-lived 24-17 lead early in the third quarter when quarterback Terry Summerfield passed 18 yards to wide receiver Tim Corrigan for the touchdown.

Weber State took control after that with an 80-yard drive engineered by Stireman. He hit Freddie Cook with a 20-yard TD pass to knot the score again at 24.

Pollard then intercepted Summerfield’s pass on the Viking 29, enabling McDonald to plunge over for his third TD of the night. McDonald also scored two first-half touchdowns.

Two plays later, Pollard picked off another pass and returned it for a touchdown, giving the Wildcats a 38-24 lead at the end of three quarters.

Stireman found Craig Slama for a 12-yard touchdown in the final quarter for the final score of the night.

The Wildcats upped their season record to 2-1 and Portland State dropped to 1-2.

Santa Clara 37, Humboldt State 0--Quarterback Greg Calcagno threw two touchdown passes to wide receiver Kevin Collins as Santa Clara humbled host Humboldt State in their non-conference game at Arcata.

Humboldt (0-1) tried three quarterbacks, Ross Miller, Matt Peters and Darryl Womack. But neither of them could score on Santa Clara (2-0).
