Calabasas Comes Down to Earth in 25-0 Romp Over Bishop Diego

Bishop Diego High could have stayed on the bus.

The Cardinals made an unorthodox entrance to the field at San Marcos High on Saturday night--a bus dropped them off behind their bench. Minutes later, they met another popular mode of transportation, air travel, or “Air Cal”--the passing attack of Calabasas. The Coyotes got out to a quick takeoff and never looked down as they left the Cardinals waiting for the bus in 25-0 victory.

The Coyotes, who pride themselves on a crack passing game, scored only one of their four touchdowns through the air.

“We know how well we can pass,” said Calabasas Coach Larry Edwards, “but I think it was time we saw what kind of opportunities we could get with our running game.”

As good as the Coyotes’ running game was their impressive defense. Calabasas held the Cardinals to only 70 yards total offense. One of the main reasons: Greg Spaulding. The junior tackle led the Coyotes with four sacks and seven unassisted tackles.

Only five minutes into the game, Peter Williamson took a handoff from Darren Del’Andrea and dashed 52 yards down the right sideline to put Calabasas up, 6-0.

In the second quarter, Calabasas defensive back Tony Sirkin ran 62 yards with an interception, busting a few tackles along the way, and put the Coyotes ahead, 19-0.
