SAN DIEGO PREP FOOTBALL : Hammerschmidt Leads Helix Past Grossmont

Top-ranked Helix High School, led by quarterback Jeff Hammerschmidt, stretched its record to 4-0 with a 28-7 nonleague over Grossmont at Helix Friday night.

Hammerschmidt had touchdown runs of 27 and 25 yards and also threw a 35-yard scoring pass to Jeff Exum.

Hammerschmidt gained 84 yards in 16 rushes and broke a 0-0 tie with his scoring run in the second quarter. He also completed 6 of 13 passes for 82 yards.

Sidney Baxter scored the Highlanders’ other touchdown with a 51-yard run in the fourth quarter. Baxter led Helix in rushing with 63 yards on three carries, and Eric Arcio picked up 42 yards on the ground.

Grossmont’s only points came on a Mike Clavell’s quarterback sneak. The Foothillers are 0-4.

In other nonleague games:

San Diego 14, Serra 13--The Cavers (1-3) broke a 13-game losing streak that extended back to the final game of the 1983 season as they rallied to edge Serra (0-3) at San Diego. San Diego quarterback Byron Johnson threw a 51-yard scoring pass to Bobo Howard with 25 seconds left in the game to give the Cavers the win.

“When my wife said we’d win tonight, I knew we would,” San Diego Coach Steve Hembera said. “It feels good, real good.”

Howard caught 6 passes for 124 yards.

Lincoln 41, Kearny 12--Lincoln quarterback Malcom Glover tossed five touchdown passes, leading the No. 4 Komets to an easy win over No. 10 Kearny at Mesa College. The Hornets are 3-0 and Kearny is 2-2.

Monte Vista 10, Valhalla 0--Tom Wurth, The Times’ All-County selection at kicker last season, kicked a 35-yard field goal to break a scoreless tie early in the fourth quarter in a game at Monte Vista High. The Monarchs (3-1) added a touchdown with 1:55 to play to seal the victory. Valhalla (1-3) was limited to 66 yards rushing and did not advance beyond midfield.

Bonita Vista 54, Marian 0--Doug Piper completed 10 of 15 passes for 174 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead Bonita Vista (3-1) to the win at Marian High. After a scoreless first quarter, Eric Gomez broke off a 55-yard touchdown run and Piper threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Vince Montano to give Bonita Vista a 14-0 halftime lead. Piper added touchdown passes of 55 yards to Montano and 7 yards to Kip Korzep. Marian (1-3) has lost three straight.

Hoover 22, Mission Bay 15--Tony Williams scored on a 17-yard run with 1:02 to play as the Cardinals (3-1) edged the Buccaneers (2-2) at Mission Bay. Hoover started its final scoring drive after Danny Clifford intercepted a pass by Mission Bay quarterback Rusty Patrick on the Cardinal 27 and returned the ball 28 yards.

Hoover quarterback Michael Walker threw two touchdown passes in the first half, giving the Cards a 15-8 halftime lead before the Bucs rallied in the fourth quarter. Mission Bay tied the score with 6:38 to play on a one-yard plunge by Rod Weichelt and a two-point conversion pass from Patrick to Kyle Ketchum.

Christian 24, La Jolla 16-At La Jolla (0-3), Christian piled up 292 yards rushing and improved its record to 4-0. Walter Wells, who scored on a 26-yard touchdown pass and a 16-yard run, had 143 yards on 8 carries. Wells’ scoring run in the fourth quarter enabled the Patriots to overcome a 17-16 deficit.

Christian quarterback Steve Essick gained 128 yards on 15 carries, including a 7-yard touchdown run in the opening quarter. La Jolla’s Leonard Richardson rushed 16 times for 123 yards, 18 of those coming on a third-quarter scoring run. Rex Edwards scored from a yard out, and Eric Silverman had a 33-yard field goal for the Vikings.

Granite Hills 21, Patrick Henry 7--The No. 5 Eagles (4-0), led by running back Kevin Robbins’ 105 yards on 22 carries, used a ball-control offense to wear down the Patriots (1-3) at Patrick Henry. The Eagles, tied 7-7 at halftime, scored twice on short runs by Tom Varnell in the second half.

Granite Hills scored first on a 33-yard pass from Donnie Carroll to Todd Parker in the second quarter. On the last play of the half, Patrick Henry quarterback Keith Courtney connected with Ron Young for an 80-yard touchdown to tie the score. Courtney completed 10 of 16 passes for 223 yards, but the Patriots suffered 3 turnovers.

Southwest 7, Hilltop 7--Hilltop (2-0-1) scored on a 22-yard pass from David Mossman to Ron White with 1:12 to play, then elected to go for the one-point conversion and the tie against Southwest (2-0-2) at Southwestern College. The Lancers started their scoring drive when Louie Saenz intercepted an Alex Sanchez pass at the Hilltop 38 with 4:50 to play.

Southwest, which last week held Chula Vista to seven points, scored in the third quarter. Sanchez and Johnny Walker teamed for the score, on a seven-yard pass. Sanchez completed 12 of 22 passes for 104 yards, and Mossman completed 7 of 13 for 113 yards.

In the Avocado League:

Escondido 34, San Marcos 14--Escondido quarterback Joe Perry completed 26 of 45 passes for 334 yards and ran for a touchdown to lead the Cougars (2-2) over the Knights (0-4). Perry fired three 9-yard scoring passes, two to Scott Weedman and one to Arnie Spiker. Figgy Figueroa caught a six-yard Perry pass.

San Marcos quarterback Rick Ebert had two TD passes.

Oceanside 18, Ramona 12--Shayne Wiggins ran back a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and Keith Combs returned an interception 14 yards for another score, leading Oceanside (1-0, 1-3) to a win over Ramona (0-1, 1-3) at Ramona. Dusty Summers kicked two field goals for Ramona, and caught a 16-yard scoring pass.
