Loyola Rips Up El Camino Real In 42-0 Romp

The El Camino Real High offense is so bad that Conquistadores Coach Skip Giancanelli even threw a 15-year-old sophomore quarterback at Loyola on Friday night at Pierce College.

He sort of fed him to the Cubs--along with the rest of his team.

After Loyola had trounced El Camino, 42-0, in this public vs. parochial school and City vs. Southern Section match-up, Giancanelli surveyed the damage.

What he saw was his team’s third straight shutout loss, an offense that was held under 100 yards for the third consecutive week, and a rushing attack that netted minus yards for the second straight week.

Sophomore Carl McFadden, who replaced senior Patrick Martin in the fourth period, fared a little better than his predecessor, completing three of six passes for 22 yards, but not against the Cubs’ first string.

Martin drew that dubious honor and, under a fierce rush, was two for six with one interception, netting seven yards.

The Conquistadores (0-3), shutout last year by Loyola, were relegated once again to a chorus line offense: 1-2-3 kick, 1-2-3 kick. They never had a legitimate drive and were minus six yards for the game--minus 35 on the ground.

El Camino made just four first downs on its own, and another three on penalties.

Other than a fourth-period touchdown by the Loyola subs, all the scoring came in first half.

Fullback John Winnek scored on runs of 43 and 48 yards, tailback Mark Estwick had touchdown runs of one and 52 yards, and quarterback Dan O’Neil scored on a 19-yard bootleg.

The Conquistadores ran 26 offensive plays to the Cubs’ 17, but were minus 31 yards in the first half.

All of Loyola’s 203 first-half yards came on the ground, most of it up the middle. Winnek had 109 yards on four carries, Estwick 61 on six, and O’Neil 33 on four.
