Fullerton : Site Being Sought for Shelter for Homeless

Share

An ad-hoc group of residents is searching for a Fullerton site that can be used to shelter homeless people in the northern part of the county.

The North Orange County Homeless Task Force has been meeting since March to pinpoint the needs of the north county’s homeless population and to find ways of providing temporary shelter and, eventually, permanent housing.

By examining the results of two countywide surveys, the task force felt that the most critical need was providing shelter for homeless families.

Phyllis Knight, a Fullerton family counselor who chairs the group, says that although shelters for single men and women are being considered for the northern part of the county, no such shelter is being planned for homeless families.

“As it stands now, we have to send families to shelters in the southern part of the county. The shelters down there are always full, but all we can do right now is keep sending people there,” Knight said.

Knight said she hopes the group can lease a building that can be used as a shelter and have it operational by January.
