Robbie Bosco threw for 417 yards and three touchdowns--all to Mark Bellini--Saturday at Fort Collins, Colo., to lead 15th-ranked Brigham Young to a 42-7 Western Athletic Conference victory over Colorado State.

The Cougars piled up 655 yards in offense in improving their overall record to 4-1 and their WAC mark to 1-0. The Rams fell to 1-4 and 1-2 in the conference.

Bosco’s touchdown pass of 14 yards to Bellini gave BYU a 14-0 halftime lead.

Bosco then hit Bellini with touchdown passes of 35 and five yards in the third quarter to break the game open.

“I’m starting to get into the groove of the offense,” Bosco said. “We got off to a slow start, but the receivers and running backs did a good job, and I had plenty of time to throw. This game will give us a lot of confidence for future games.”

Steve Bartalo’s one-yard touchdown in the third quarter was Colorado State’s only points.

Bosco drove the Cougars 75 yards, capped by Lakei Heimuli’s 17-yard scoring burst up the middle, to make the score 35-7. Reserve quarterback Blaine Fowler found Bruce Hansen for a 27-yard touchdown pass to close out the scoring.

“I don’t think that I had my team prepared today,” Colorado State Coach Leon Fuller said. “I could have done a better job of preparation. Our concentration wasn’t very good today.”

Bartalo--the WAC’s leading rusher with a 115.2 yards per game average--was held to 19 yards in 13 carries.

Colorado State’s Kelly Stouffer, harried by the BYU rush, completed 17 of 32 passes for 158 yards.

Pacific 19, New Mexico State 10--Backup quarterback Greg Murphy engineered a pair of fourth-quarter scoring drives to lift the Tigers to a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. victory at Las Cruces, N.M.

The win kept Pacific unbeaten in two PCAA games and improved the Tigers’ overall record to 3-2. New Mexico State is 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

Murphy came on in the third period when starting quarterback Hue Jackson was sidelined after being sacked. With the score tied, 10-10, going into the final quarter, Murphy completed 4 of 5 passes for 82 yards to key the drives.

Steve Souza scored from seven yards out to give the Tigers a 16-10 lead. On their next possession, Kevin Norgaard made it 19-10 with a 31-yard field goal.

The Aggies scored on a 45-yard field goal by Andy Weiler in the final minute of the first half and tied the score in the third period on a five-yard run by Jim Miller, who was sacked seven times for 47 yards in losses.
