The Region : County AIDS Test Center Finally Opens

Share

Los Angeles County’s alternative AIDS testing center opened at the Edelman Health Center after a long delay caused by feuding over money between state and county officials. The center at 1213 Highland Ave. will test for the HTLV-III antibody associated with acquired immune deficiency syndrome, the deadly disease that has stricken more than 1,000 locally. Testing is free and confidential, but appointments are required. They can be made by calling (213) 464-7276 Tuesday through Saturday. State law requires the alternative sites be set up for testing of people who fear they have AIDS. Opening of the facility was delayed several months when the county demanded extra money to run it.
