Golden West Women Maintain SCC Lead

The Golden West College women’s volleyball team maintained its lead in the South Coast Conference Wednesday by beating Cerritos, 16-18, 15-7, 15-3, 15-6.

After losing the first set, the Rustlers (5-0) trailed Cerritos (2-1) by a score of 6-0. But Golden West rallied with the aid of sophomore setter Julie Boland, who had 32 assists. Rustler outside hitter Jennafer La Paglia had seven kills and four blocks and Marina Van Mille contributed seven kills and three aces.

In other South Coast Conference action:

Saddleback 3, Orange Coast, 0--The Gauchos (3-2) beat the Pirates, 15-5, 15-10, 18-16 in a match at Saddleback.

Gaucho center back Heidi Watz turned in a fine defensive performance and outside hitter Anna Castillo added 10 kills. Saddleback’s Mara Abele scored five aces.

Rancho Santiago 3, Mt. San Antonio College 1--Anne Oberschlake recorded 12 kills as the Dons (3-2) recorded a 14-16, 15-11, 15-8, 15-9 victory at Rancho Santiago. Teammate Trisha Sasan contributed seven aces and 18 assists.

In Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. action:

Hawaii 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--The sixth-ranked Rainbows (3-0, 14-2) swept the Titans (0-7, 7-10) with scores of 15-4, 15-12, 15-12 at Titan Gym. Fullerton outside hitter Wendy Knapp had 10 kills and Sandy Ballinger had nine.
