University High had shut down San Diego’s passing and running games, so the Comeback Kids came up with a 72-yard quarterback bootleg by Bryon Johnson to give San Diego an 18-14 win in a game played at here Friday night.

It was San Diego’s second straight come-from-behind victory after going winless in 10 games last season and the first three games this year. Last week, the Cavers came back from a 13-0 third-quarter deficit to defeat Serra, 14-13.

On Friday night, San Diego trailed 14-6 after three quarters. Halfback Paul Thornton scored on an 11-yard run early in the fourth quarter to make it 14-12. Johnson failed to hit Bobo Howard on the two-point conversion attempt.

With approximately six minutes to play, first-year San Diego Coach Steve Hembera called a bootleg with Johnson faking to his left and running right. He took it all the way down the right sideline to give the Cavers a 18-14 lead.

“They were double teaming Bobo and shutting down our running game,” Hembera said, “so I decided to go with the bootleg. Johnson really earned the score on his run.”

Johnson gained 130 yards on 10 carries and also threw a 73-yard touchdown pass to Howard in the first quarter. The Cavers led 6-0 at half. In the third quarter, James Wilson scored on a 43 yard run and Eric Coleman went over from three yards for the University scores. Robby Hughes added both extra points to give the Dons a 14-6 lead.

“They are an aggressive hard hitting team and they solved our 4-3 defense in the second half,” Hembera said. “But last week we finally got the confidence that we could beat someone. It had been a long time since we won a ballgame.”

Now, it’s been a couple of weeks since they have lost one.
