A greater-alarm fire late Wednesday heavily damaged a Stanton apartment complex and forced the evacuation of nearly 40 people, fire officials said.

Ten firefighter companies from Stanton, Anaheim, Buena Park, Garden Grove and Orange County were sent to the Continental Gardena Apartments, 8113 Cerritos Ave., after an alarm at 11:56 p.m., a Stanton fire dispatcher said.

The first firefighters to arrive reported that three apartment buildings were fully involved in flames and a mutual-aid request was made.

The blaze took about an hour to control because fire spread into an attic, the dispatcher said.

Nearly 40 people fled the buildings and were provided emergency shelter at a Garden Grove motel by the American Red Cross.

Firefighter Capt. Ken McGrath suffered a seriously bruised foot when a side-rigger, a piece of equipment used to stabilize a ladder truck at the scene of a fire, fell on him, officials said. He was treated at Los Alamitos General Hospital, then sent home.

Damage was estimated at $750,000. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
