Ducks Stage Comeback, Beat Aztecs

Quarterback Chris Miller threw for four touchdowns and ran for another to lead Oregon to a 49-37 victory over San Diego State in a nonconference game Saturday night.

San Diego State quarterback Todd Santos completed 32 of 44 passes for 398 yards and 4 touchdowns after entering the game in the second quarter.

Miller, who completed 26 of 37 passes for 368 yards, connected with senior flanker Lew Barnes for 9 completions for 183 yards and 1 touchdown as Oregon boosted its record to 3-4.

Barnes had three receptions for 56 yards in a third-quarter drive that enabled to Oregon regain the lead, 35-31, after San Diego State had scored 17 consecutive points. Miller capped the drive with a three-yard touchdown pass to Bobby DeBisschop with less than five minutes to play in the third quarter.

The Ducks added a one-yard touchdown run by Tony Cherry late in the third quarter and a five-yard touchdown pass from Miller to Kevin Wilhite midway through the fourth quarter.

San Diego State, which fell to 3-4, took a 31-28 lead when Santos hit Webster Slaughter on a five-yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter. Webster caught another five-yard touchdown pass from Santos in the fourth quarter.

After a scoreless first quarter, the two teams combined for 52 points in the second quarter.
