Baie Scores Four Times in Hart Win

Times Staff Writer

At this time last season, Hart High Coach Rick Scott hadn’t even heard of Brian Baie.

Since transferring to Hart from Sacramento in September, however, Baie has stamped his name all over opponents’ end zones.

Thursday night at College of the Canyons, Baie scored four times in the first half, leading Hart to a 35-9 Foothill League rout of Alhambra.

The fullback carried just eight times and gained only 23 yards. But they were big yards.

“He’s been a great addition to our club,” Scott said of the senior who has scored 12 touchdowns. “Our game plan when we’re inside the five is to give it to our strongest back. That’s Brian. He just doesn’t get stopped.”

At least he wasn’t stopped by Alhambra (1-2 in league, 4-4 overall). Baie also blocked two punts.

Junior quarterback Jim Bonds also enjoyed a productive night for Hart. He completed 14 of 18 passes for 209 yards and a touchdown despite sitting out most of the fourth quarter. His third-quarter scoring pass to running back Chris Hite gave the Indians a 35-9 advantage. Hite, the leading receiver in the Valley-area with 29 catches, also rushed for 82 yards on six carries.

After starting the season 0-3-1, the Indians have won four straight and are 3-0 in the league, a half-game ahead of Schurr, which plays Burbank tonight.

Schurr, ranked No. 1 in the Coastal Conference, is scheduled to play Hart in the final week of the season in what could be for the league championship. Hart has won the title the last two years.

“I think our slow start helped us in a way,” Scott said. “We got our minds off the rankings. We’re emotionally up for anyone we’re playing now, and that’s a very positive thing. I think we’ll be there against Schurr for the league championship.”
