Friday’s Highlights : Fontana Beats Redlands on Late Kick

Ken Gonzales kicked a 38-yard field goal with 46 seconds left to give Fontana, The Times’ No. 6-ranked Southern Section team, an 18-16 victory over Redlands Friday night in a Citrus Belt League football game at Fontana.

Quarterback Barry Titus led Fontana on a drive to the winning field goal from his own 39 to the Redlands 9 before a penalty and a sack put the ball back on the 21.

Keying the drive was a 16-yard reception by Tim Zickuhr, who then pulled in a 10-yard pass on a fourth-and-seven situation at the Redlands 25 to keep the drive going.

Redlands scored on its first play from scrimmage on Toby Tyler’s 81-yard romp. Redlands scored on its next possession on a 5-yard run by Sam Jackson to take a 13-0 lead.

Fontana is 4-1 in the league and 6-2 overall. Redlands is 2-3 and 4-4.

In another close Citrus Belt League game, Riverside Poly, The Times’ No. 3-rated team, needed a 30-yard run and a one-yard plunge by Chris Brantley to turn back Eisenhower, 21-14, at Eisenhower.

Brantley also had touchdown runs of one yard and 36 yards, and finished with 103 yards in 20 carries.

Riverside Poly, the defending Big Five champion, is 4-0 in the league and 7-0 overall. Eisenhower dropped to 2-3 and 5-3.

City

Jefferson 10, Roosevelt 10--The Roughriders lost two chances to win in the final six minutes and had to settle for a tie in an Eastern League game at Jefferson. Trailing, 10-7, Roosevelt drove to the Jefferson three with six minutes left. On third down, quarterback Hector Islava fired a low pass to Ramon Galindo in the corner of the end zone for an apparent touchdown, but the referee ruled the ball touched the ground for an incomplete pass. Roosevelt then settled for a tie on Jody Melendez’s 20-yard field goal. The Roughriders again drove, this time to the Jefferson 14, but with just 15 seconds remaining, Melendez’s 31-yard field-goal attempt was short. Jefferson was led by Curtis Williams, who returned a punt 100 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter and gave Jefferson a 10-7 lead on a 24-yard field goal with 10:39 left in the game. Islava scored Roosevelt’s only touchdown on a four-yard run in the third quarter. Roosevelt is 2-0-1 in the league and 5-1-1 overall. Jefferson is 1-1-1 and 5-1-1.

Hamilton 10, Palisades 0--Philip Frazier scooped up a Palisades fumble and raced 71 yards for the game’s only touchdown and Eduardo Vega kicked a 55-yard field goal to lead the Tigers to a Crosstown League win at Hamilton. Six Palisades turnovers--three fumbles and three interceptions--helped Hamilton preserve the shutout. Hamilton quarterback Brent Turley was forced to leave the game with a dislocated elbow and is out for the season. Hamilton is 1-6, 1-3 in the league. Palisades is 2-1 and 3-4.

Lincoln 13, Eagle Rock 0--Pablo Cano returned the second-half kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown, and Turai Blanche ran for 98 yards in 14 carries to give the Tigers the Northern League win at Lincoln. Steve Silva, who finished with 71 yards in 10 carries, scored Lincoln’s first touchdown with a two-yard run in the second quarter. Eagle Rock, which turned the ball over three times, had two serious scoring threats, one ending on a Cano tackle at the Lincoln four on fourth down in the first quarter. The other scoring threat was thwarted in the second quarter by Gus Vargas, who blocked a 30-yard field goal. Lincoln is 6-1 overall, 3-0 in the league. Eagle Rock dropped to 1-6 and 1-3.

Manual Arts 20, Washington 12--Eric Huckaby completed 6 of 13 passes for 115 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Toilers to a Crosstown League win at Manual Arts. Huckaby’s first touchdown pass was for nine yards to wide reciever John Gonzolas for a 7-0 lead. In the third quarter, Huckaby went to Gonzolas again, this time for 44 yards and a 13-0 lead. Huckaby’s third score came in the fourth quarter, the pass going to Glen Coffer for 22 yards and a 20-0 lead. Washington rallied for two late touchdowns to make it close. Manual Arts is 2-3-1 overall, 2-1 in the league. Washington dropped its second straight league game and is 1-2 in the league and 3-4 overall.

Southern Section La Mirada 27, Norwalk 3--Senior Kelly Brooks scored three times on runs of 13 and 8 yards and a 94-yard kickoff return at La Mirada Stadium to lead the Matadores to their third straight Suburban League win and seventh victory in eight games. Brooks gained 175 yards in 20 carries. In eight games, he has accounted for 1,383 yards and 20 touchdowns. Norwalk is 1-2 in the league and 3-3-1 overall.

Lynwood 35, Dominguez 12--Senior Marc Birch ran the opening kickoff back 95 yards for a touchdown and recovered teammate Austin McCowan’s fumble in the end zone for a second score in the San Gabriel Valley League game at Lynwood. McCowan had run 22 yards before fumbling. Reggie Pitchford also had two touchdowns for Lynwood on runs of 16 and 2 yards and gained 75 yards on 17 carries. Dominguez junior Anthony Green gained 105 yard in 20 carries. The win was Lynwood’s 28th straight in league. On the year the Knight’s are now 3-0 in league and 7-1 overall. Dominguez is 1-3 and 1-6.

Bishop Amat 55, Piux X 14--Junior Eric Bieniemy scored the Lancers’ first three touchdowns on runs of 4, 8 and 25 yards, and finished the evening with 155 yards in 18 carries in the Angelus League game at Bishop Amat. In seven games, Bieniemy has gained 1,193 yards in 188 tries. Teammate Mike Simen has 118 yards in 12 carries, and has scored once. Lancer quarterback Rick Carter was effective, completing 13 of 16 for 123 yards and touchdown plays of 24 yards to Pat Patterson and 4 yards to Stephon Pace. Bishop Amat, The Times’ No. 2-ranked team, is 3-0 in the league and 8-0 overall. Pius X is 0-3 and 4-4.

Canyon Country Canyon 62, Ridgecrest Burroughs 6--The win pushed the Cowboys’ winning streak to 32--the second longest in the State. Burroughs opened the scoring with a touchdown in the first quarter but 53 seconds later Canyon had scored twice on Randy Austin’s 85-yard touchdown return and Greg Smith’s 23-yard interception return of a pass batted into the air by teammate Carey Caulfield. Junior tailback Lance Cross carried 17 times for 136 yards, and quarterback John Watkins complete 7 of 12 passes for 120 yards and three touchdowns. Canyon is now 3-0 in the league and 8-0 overall. Burroughs is 1-2 and 5-2-1.

Loyola 28, St. Francis 7--Mark Estwick carried 23 times for 148 yards and scored on runs of two, four and one yards for The Times’ No. 8-ranked team. Loyola is 3-0 in the league and 7-1 overall. St. Francis dropped to 1-2 and 2-6.
