College Volleyball Roundup : Golden West Sweeps Rancho Santiago

The Golden West College volleyball team defeated Rancho Santiago, 3-0, in a South Coast Conference match at Rancho Santiago Friday. The first-place Rustlers (10-1, 10-3) won, 15-6, 15-4, 15-3.

Golden West sophomore setter Julie Boland had 22 assists and three aces, while freshman outside hitter Lisa Manfree had 11 kills and two aces. The Dons dropped to 4-6.

The Rustlers can clinch at least a tie for their third-straight conference title in Friday’s 7 p.m. match against Cerritos at Golden West.

In other college volleyball action Wednesday:

Orange Coast 3, Long Beach City 0--Middle blockers Michelle Lazorek and Julie Simpson led the Pirates to the victory in Costa Mesa. The win improves Orange Coast’s season record to 9-4.

Saddleback 3, Mt. San Antonio College 0--The Gauchos (7-4, 8-6) beat Mounties, 15-2, 15-6, 15-8, at Saddleback in a South Coast Conference behind solid performances by middle blockers Mara Abele and Kim Parks. The Gauchos play Orange Coast at 7 p.m. Friday at OCC.

Chapman 3, UC San Diego 1--After losing the first game, the Panthers (21-13) came back to win three straight to take the nonconference match against host UCSD (25-16), 7-15, 15-5, 15-11, 15-4. Pam Winokur led Chapman with 15 kills and Mary Cahill had a game-high 36 assists.

Hawaii 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--The Titans (1-11, 9-20) could not manage their second win of the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. season against third-place Hawaii (9-3, 23-6). The Rainbows won the match at Fullerton, 15-7, 15-10, 15-6. Hawaii, which hit an outstanding .371 as a team, was led by outside hitter Reyden Ahuna with 14 kills. Fullerton outside hitters Wendy Knapp and Joan McGhee had 12 kills each. The Titans play the University of Pacific at 7:30 Friday in Stockton.
