University Gains 2-A Playoffs by Beating...

The knot enfolding second place in the City Western League was untangled Friday, leaving University High School as the big winner.

University’s 19-7 win over La Jolla, combined with Clairemont’s 28-6 victory over Kearny, left the Dons and Chieftains tied for second. But University, thanks to its 35-21 win over Clairemont last week, will advance to the San Diego Section 2-A playoffs as the West’s second representative.

University (3-2, 5-5) scored 13 early points and coasted at La Jolla (2-3, 2-6-1) Friday afternoon. Quarterback Matt Smith threw for two touchdowns in the first period, one of 10 yards to Bucket Gonzales and the other of 25 yards to Peter Hoss.

The Dons made it 19-0 in the third quarter on a three-yard run by Eric Coleman. Darrell King ran 17 yards in the final period for La Jolla’s only score.

Tailback James Wilson led University with 113 yards on 15 carries, while Don Lincoln paced La Jolla with 92 yards on eight carries.

After the Dons won Friday afternoon, they had to wait a few hours for the result of the Clairemont-Kearny game at Mesa College. If Kearny had won, it would have qualified for the playoffs since it beat University, 14-3.

But Clairemont (3-2, 5-5) raced to a 22-0 halftime lead and easily beat the Komets (2-3, 5-5).

CITY WESTERN LEAGUE Mission Bay 14, University City 8--University City (4-1, 6-3), which clinched the league championship last week, stumbled against the Buccaneers (1-4, 4-6) at Mission Bay. Senior Rod Weichelt led the Bucs with 167 yards on 30 rushes and scored both touchdowns.

Mission Bay, running its offense without a huddle most of the game, drove 68 yards for a touchdown on its opening possession. Weichelt scored from the 3-yard line. University City tied the score at 8-8 in the second quarter on a 56-yard pass from Brian Sexton to Scott Jalowayski and a two-point conversion. Mission Bay scored what proved to be the game-winner on a four-yard run by Weichelt with 2:43 left in the first half.

University City, which starts the San Diego Section 2-A playoffs next week, suffered two key injuries. Tailback Paul MacRenato, who had been averaging 99.8 yards per game, left in the second quarter with a knee injury. Fullback Darrin Wagner suffered a hip pointer late in the game.

CITY EASTERN LEAGUE Point Loma 21, Madison 12--John Stanley scored all three of the Pointers’ touchdowns, but hefell short of the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the season. Stanley gained 57 yards on 20 carries, giving him 954 yards this season. He also caught 4 passes for 76 yards.

The Pointers led, 14-0, at halftime before Madison rallied for two scores in the third quarter. Warhawk quarterback Maurice Jackson threw scoring passes of 68 yards to Jimmie Dean and 51 yards to Gerald Harris. In the fourth quarter, Pointer quarterback Walt Edwards hit Stanley for a 33-yard touchdown.

Point Loma finishes at 6-3-1 and Madison at 3-5-2.

Morse 27, Patrick Henry 15--Wesley Fuller scored on punt returns of 48 and 51 yards to lead the ninth-ranked Tigers (5-0, 7-3) in a game played at Henry. All the scoring took place in the first half. The Tigers’ other touchdowns came on a nine-yard run by George Jackson and a seven-yard pass from Manny Cass to Orlan McNair. Henry (1-3-1, 3-6-1) scored on a 14-yard run by Darren Thrower and an 8-yard pass from Keith Courtney to Junior Young. Young had 9 catches for 128 yards.

CITY CENTRAL LEAGUE Crawford 33, Hoover 7--Quarterback Tommy Fejarang ran for 91 yards and a touchdown while passing for 139 yards and two scores to lead the No. 5 Colts (5-0, 7-1-1) at Madison. Fejarang threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Dewey Brown and a 48-yard scoring pass to Dewrell Wesley in the second quarter. Hoover (3-2, 6-3-1) pulled within 14-7 on a 63-yard pass from Michael Walker to John Roots in the third quarter, but Fejarang answered with a six-yard scoring run in the same quarter.

GROSSMONT LEAGUE El Capitan 16, Valhalla 9--The home victory gives the Vaqueros the 2-A Grossmont League title. El Capitan finishes with a 2-0-1 league mark, while Valhalla falls to 2-1. Jim Hunnell’s 37-yard field goal with 24 seconds in the third quarter gave El Capitan (4-4-1) a 10-9 lead that it never relinquished. Rick Bowe scored on a one-yard run with 3:20 to play to cap a 97-yard drive for the winners. The touchdown was set up by a 52-yard run by Brian Boggess.

AVOCADO LEAGUE San Pasqual 41, Escondido 15--Dave Emerson scored four touchdowns as the Eagles (4-2, 6-3) beat the Cougars (3-3, 4-5-1) at Escondido. San Pasqual scored three times in the second quarter to break open a scoreless game, and led, 34-0, going into the fourth quarter. Eagle quarterback Greg Bratten ran for one touchdown and threw for another to Emerson.

El Camino 7, San Marcos 7--El Camino (5-0-1, 6-3-1) rallied from a 7-0 deficit in the fourth quarter to avert a defeat that would have given San Marcos (4-1-1, 5-4-1) a share of the league title. Playing at Oceanside, San Marcos went ahead, 7-0, on a 56-yard punt return by Abel Neri in the second quarter. El Camino tied the score when Jack Taele scored from one yard out with 10:05 to play. The Wildcats’ Dave Fick attempted a 42-yard field goal with 14 seconds left, but it fell short.

METRO MESA LEAGUE Bonita Vista 13, Montgomery 6--The Barons (2-2, 7-3) fell behind, 6-0, in the first quarter at Montgomery (1-3, 5-5) before rallying to win. Steve Rangel scored on a nine-yard run to give Bonita Vista a 7-6 lead in the first quarter. Doug Piper put the Barons ahead with a one-yard run in the second period.

NONLEAGUE Chula Vista 44, Santana 0--Robert Gambala caught nine passes for 212 yards, including two for touchdowns, as playoff-bound Chula Vista closed the regular season at 8-2.

Gambala caught scoring passes of 42 and 52 yards from quarterback Brian Murphy, who completed 16 of 21 passes for 282 yards. Sione Fehoko rushed for 98 yards on 13 carries and scored on runs of 32 and 5 yards. Chula Vista’s defense held Santana (1-9) to 116 yards total offense. The Sultans gained 99 yards passing and 17 rushing. PALOMAR LEAGUE Orange Glen 28, Torrey Pines 14--Quarterback Brett Salisbury threw for one touchdown and ran for another as the No. 10 Patriots beat the visiting Falcons (2-4, 3-7). Salisbury hit Scott Carlovsky for a one-yard pass in the first quarter, then ran eight yards for a score that made it 28-7 in the third quarter.

METRO-SOUTH BAY LEAGUE Castle Park 24, Marian 16--League champion Castle Park (3-0, 4-6) rallied from 7-3 halftime deficit to defeat Marian (0-3, 1-8).

David Carpenter’s 60-yard run in the third quarter put Castle Park ahead, 10-7. The Trojans went up 17-7 when Steve Gross ran 30 yards with an intercepted pass.

Marian cut the lead to 17-16 in the fourth quarter, before Castle Park iced the game on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Dominic Quintero to Steve Cane with four minutes to play.
