Men’s Basketball : Chapman Rallies to Beat Biola, 63-60

Paul Rollins made two free throws with eight seconds remaining in overtime Friday night to insure Chapman College’s 63-60 win over Biola in the opening round of the McDonalds Tipoff Tournament at Southern Utah State College in Cedar City.

A crowd of 5,200 in The Centrum watched the Panthers and the Eagles play to a 54-54 tie during regulation time. Biola led by three points, 59-56, with 2:13 left, but Chapman forward Jon Samuelson made a three-point play to tie the game.

Reserve forward Kelly Huston, who led all scorers with 24 points and 10 rebounds, then put the Panthers ahead, 61-59, with a layup.

Biola’s Tony Hicks made a free throw with a minute left to cut the lead to a point, and Samuelson missed the front end of a one-and-one situation to give the Eagles a final chance, but Joe Hutt missed a 10-foot jumper with 10 seconds remaining.

Huston made 10 of 18 shots from the field and 4 of 6 from the free-throw line, and Samuelson added 16 points for Chapman, which will meet Southern Utah, an 83-67 winner over La Verne in the other first-round game, in tonight’s championship game.

In other college action:

Cal State Hayward 68, Southern California College 67--Glenn Graham made two free throws with four seconds remaining to give the Pioneers the win in a first-round game of the Cal Poly Pomona Tournament in Kellogg Gym.

The Vanguards (1-1) trailed, 37-29, at halftime but rallied to take a four-point lead with two minutes left behind the play of John Harr, who led SCC with 21 points.

A short jump shot by Michael Harris, who led all scorers with 21 points, gave Hayward (1-0) a 66-65 lead. Harr made two free throws with 10 seconds left to give the Vanguards a 67-66 advantage before Graham was fouled by SCC’s Robbie Lucas and made the game-winning free throws.

Ken Bardsley added 14 points and Lucas had 10 points and 6 rebounds for the Vanguards. Cye Adams added 17 for the Pioneers, who advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four last year.

Christ College Irvine 90, Pacific Coast Baptist Bible 58--The Crusaders won to advance to tonight’s tournament championship game against Cal Tech.

In the Fullerton Community College Tournament:

Fullerton 58, Santa Barbara City 47--Steve Snow scored 16 and Rocco Myers, Bart Hakeman and Colin Moss each added 9 as the Hornets (2-0) beat the Vaqueros in a semifinal game. Fullerton will play Grossmont for the tournament title tonight at 8.

SANTA BARBARA CITY (47)--Stevenson 13, Gama 14, Moore 2, Becker 4, McCoy 5, Baily 7, Garrett 2.

FULLERTON (58)--Buda 6, Snow 16, Fraser 2, Myers 9, Moss 9, Hakeman 9, Melton 7.

Grossmont 88, Long Beach City 82--Tryone Muldrow and Shaun Manning each scored 17 as the Griffins beat the Vikings.

Cerritos 100, West Los Angeles 50--Guard Marlon Wadlington scored 19 points and center Tom Tolber added 15 to lead the Falcons to a rout of the Oilers in a consolation semifinal game. Cerritos (1-1) will play San Bernardino Valley for the consolation championship today at 4.

San Bernardino Valley 120, Southwestern 101--Anthony Macon scored 19 points to lead the Indians past the Apaches in a high-scoring consolation semifinal game.
