Girls Basketball Roundup : Marina Edges Orange on Kuester’s Shot

Temre Kuester’s 15-foot jump shot at the buzzer Tuesday gave the Marina High School a 49-47 win over Orange in a second round game in the Irvine Tournament.

The Vikings rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit to overtake the Panthers.

Kuester scored 13 points, including 9 in the fourth quarter. Kirkup had 10 points and 5 assists.

The Vikings were led by Dawn Charroin’s 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Panther center Suzette Sargeant was the game-high scorer with 24 points and guard Debbie Kerr had 14 points, including two late baskets to keep her team in contention.

In other Irvine Tournament action:

Irvine 62, Estancia 32--Shelly Moceri scored 19 points to lead the Vaqueros to a consolation round victory over the Eagles.

Cindy Edwards and Tamura Kimi each scored 12 points for the Vaqueros, and Wendy Angus added 10. Irvine (1-1) advances to the consolation semifinals.

Yoland Recio led Estancia (0-2), which was eliminated from the tournament.

In nonleague action:

Laguna Beach 41, Laguna Hills 37--Felicia Chalmers scored 19 points to lead the Artists in a game at Laguna Beach. The Artists’ Laura Weingarten, the team’s most valuable player last season, underwent an emergency appendectomy Monday night and is not expected to return to the team for several weeks. Mater Dei 64, Huntington Beach 39--Noelle Manfre, Geri Gainey, and Kim Ellerman scored 16 points apiece to lead the Monarchs to the win at Mater Dei. Manfre added 9 steals and 4 assists. Shawna Armstrong led the Oilers with 10 points. Mater Dei meets Costa Mesa in the Artesia Tournament Friday afternoon.

Fountain Valley 55, Hawthorne 41--Melissa Handley scored 20 points and Jackie Cook scored 9 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Barons to the win at Fountain Valley. Andrea Kabwasa led Hawthorne with 14 points. Fountain Valley plays Lakewood in the Artesia Tournament Thursday.

Ocean View 55, California 25--The Seahawks won their season-opener in Whittier behind 28 points and 10 rebounds from Trina Vlachos. Seahawk guard Dana Douty had 3 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals. Ocean View is at Crescenta Valley Thursday.

Canyon 64, Rancho Alamitos 21--The Comanches easily won their season-opener at Canyon behind Angie Nelsen’s 15 points and 14 points from Sherry Southard. Canyon is at Norco Thursday.

Esperanza 60, La Habra 53--Forward Sharon Warmus scored a game-high 29 points to lead the Aztecs (1-0). La Habra’s Robin Seabrook, a 5-11 sophomore, led the Highlanders (0-1) with 23 points. La Habra committed 20 turnovers.

Magnolia 53, Troy 47--Michelle Carter scored 34 points to lead the Sentinels (1-0). Carter, who led Orange County in scoring last season with a 31 points per game average, was triple teamed for much of the game. Troy’s Jennifer McCarteny had 21 points for the Warriors (0-1).
