San Diego Prep Basketball : Balanced El Camino Attack Upends Chadwick in Laguna Beach Tourney

El Camino High School, a San Diego Section 2-A semifinalist last season, opened the season with a 74-68 win over Chadwick, the defending Southern Section 1-A champion, Tuesday night in the Laguna Beach High School tournament.

The Wildcats trailed, 15-13, after one quarter, but outscored Chadwick by 10 points in the second period to take a 39-31 halftime lead. El Camino’s margin grew to 61-47 going into the fourth quarter.

Ken Crawford led El Camino with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Randy Hale added 17 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists, and Edmund Johnson had 12 points and 9 assists.

In other games Tuesday night:

San Pasqual 64, St. Augustine 53--The Golden Eagles took a 27-14 lead by halftime and held on to win at St. Augustine in the season opener for both teams. Jeff Baglio led San Pasqual with 17 points. St. Augustine’s Charlie Applegate had a game-high 21 points.

Poway 81, El Capitan 48--The visiting Titans, winners of the last two San Diego Section 3-A championships, outscored the Vaqueros, 27-6, in the third quarter of the season-opener for both teams. Jud Buechler led Poway with 20 points, while Dominick Johnson added 19 and Andy Byrne scored 15.
