It was a rout.

The slap-dash Flashes from Fillmore High were reduced to astonished onlookers at the unveiling of the 1985-86 Simi Valley basketball team Wednesday night in a first-round game of the Simi Valley Tip-Off Tournament.

Fillmore, which comes from a town probably best known as the home of Egg City, put goose eggs on the scoreboard for half of the first quarter, allowing Simi Valley to run up a 17-0 lead. Simi Valley went on to win, 106-38.

Contest? This was more of a con than a test for Simi Valley, which was ranked No. 2 in The Times’ preseason poll for the Valley.

Fillmore was invited to the tournament on short notice after two teams canceled. The Flashes must have felt like a mark, someone invited to a poker party because their pockets are easy to clean.

In this case, they were MacLeaned. Simi Valley sophomore center Don MacLean, named one of the top 100 prospects in the nation by Dick Vitale of ESPN, did not start for the Pioneers, but led all scorers with 23 points.

MacLean and fellow sophomore Shawn DeLaittre, who scored 20 points off the bench, were Babes in Toyland, doing pretty much as they pleased. On one memorable play, MacLean took a rebound under the Fillmore basket, turned and fired a pass the length of the court to DeLaittre, who deposited a layup without dribbling.

How long can the two talented sophomores remain non-starters?

“I keep telling the team this is the land of opportunity,” Simi Valley Coach Bob Hawking said. “If they play as they did tonight, they’ll start.”

MacLean had 11 rebounds and DeLaittre added 10.

Fillmore Coach Rich Toschi insisted the game was good for his team.

“I’d do it again tomorrow night,” he said. “The only way to get better is to play a team better than you. The kids will bounce back, and this experience will help us when we play teams our own size.”

As for Hawking, he said, “This was not a sterling performance.”

Guard Mike Hankins had 20 points for Simi Valley, and forward Gus Gates added 14. Jaron Chatterly led Fillmore with 10 points.

Kevin Tate led Hueneme with 10 points and sophomore Robert Secrest added nine. Reggie Betton scored 10 points for Antelope Valley and Paul Ocker had eight.
