Bobby Ross, who returned Maryland football to national prominence, agreed in principle to a guaranteed contract as head coach of the Terrapins for four more years.
Ross said he was offered the coaching job at Minnesota Tuesday but turned it down.
John Gutekunst, Minnesota defensive coordinator the last two years, was named head coach of the Gophers. Gutekunst, 41, succeeded Lou Holtz, who has replaced Gerry Faust at Notre Dame.
