Community College Roundup : Hall Scores 14 Points as Falcons Win Tournament

Jerome Hall scored 14 points and Tom Tolbert and Russ Heicke each added 10 Saturday night to help Cerritos College rout Mt. San Antonio College, 69-49, in the championship game of the Miles Eaton tournament at Orange Coast College.

In a rematch between the teams that tied for the South Coast Conference title last year, the Falcons jumped out to an early lead and held a 41-19 halftime advantage.

Willie Joseph, who scored 18 points in Cerritos’ semifinal win over Orange Coast and had 8 points in the final, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Tolbert and Hall joined Joseph on the all-tournament team.

Cerritos improved its record to 6-1 with the win. Mt. SAC, which was led by Ron Draper’s 15 points and 9 rebounds, suffered its first loss and is 4-1.

Imperial Valley 60, Orange Coast College 58--Melvin Jackson scored 21 points to lead the Arabs to a third-place finish. Joe Seager led the Pirates with 16 points and Chuck McGavran had 9 assists.

L.A. Southwest 81, Mt. San Jacinto 59--The Cougars scored a convincing win for fifth place.

In Grossmont Tournament action:

Camp Pendleton Marines 101, Rancho Santiago 80--Former La Quinta star Mark Moses scored 28 points in a losing effort and was named to the all-tournament team. Moses totaled 89 points in three tournament games. The Dons fell to 5-1, while Camp Pendleton improved to 26-3.
