Boys’ Prep Basketball Roundup : Final Sweetwater Surge Beats Mira Mesa, 63-62

Sweetwater High School rallied from a six-point deficit late in the game Saturday to beat Mira Mesa, 63-62, in the first round of the Hilltop Invitational boys’ basketball tournament.

The Red Devils placed four players in double figures, led by Mahlon Williams with 13 points. San Styles and Brent Lawrence scored 12 each and Matt Simmons added 11.

John Hannon of Mira Mesa was the game’s high scorer with 15 points.

Also in the Hilltop Invitational Saturday:

Hoover 58, Chula Vista 50--The Cardinals, led by Brian Angelo’s 21 points, took an early lead and were never slowed by the Spartans. Tyrone Bell added 16 points for Hoover, while Jeff Knight paced Chula Vista with 16 points.

Kearny 61, Point Loma 54--The Komets scored several crucial baskets in the final minutes to break open their game with the Pointers. Steve Daley scored 21 points for Kearny, and teammate Kevin Archer added 20. Point Loma’s top scorer was Richard Clark with 15.

Hilltop 74, Torrey Pines 69--The Falcons led early in the third quarter, but the Lancers rallied to win the game on their home court. James McCurty scored 26 and David Mossman had 19 to lead Hilltop. Scott Thompson of Torrey Pines led all scorers with 31 points.

In the Mt. Helix Tournament:

San Dieguito 68, Granite Hills 59--The Mustangs (3-1) opened up a 51-39 lead after three quarters and coasted in the final period to beat the Eagles (0-3) in the last round of the round-robin tournament. Jon Tenney scored 20 points to pace Granite Hills.
