Saddleback and Snow Share National Community College Football Title

Saddleback and Snow (Utah) colleges, who both completed 11-0 years with bowl victories Saturday, were named co-national community college football champions by the JC Grid Wire on Monday.

The Gauchos defeated Fullerton, 32-13, in the PONY Bowl and Snow beat Northeastern Oklahoma in the Mid-American Bowl in Tulsa, Okla., 29-14. Going into Saturday, Snow was ranked No. 1 and Saddleback No. 2.

“I looked at comparative scores, strength of opponents and the won-loss records of their opponents, and I just don’t think either Saddleback of Snow deserved to be ranked No. 2,” said Hank Ives, publisher of the JC Grid Wire.

This is only the second time in the 26-year history of the JC Grid Wire that teams have shared the national title. In 1981, Sacramento City and Butler County, Kan., were co-champions.

“I think this is great,” said Ken Swearingen, Saddleback coach. “No longer are we the little school down south. As far as our program coming out of the shadows, this just about does it.”

The highest final national ranking that Saddleback had previously achieved was No. 4 in 1981, when it went 11-0, including a 13-12 PONY Bowl win over San Diego Mesa.

Other Southern California teams listed in the top 20 were No. 5 Glendale (10-1), No. 10 Southwestern (9-1-1) and No. 18 Grossmont (9-1-1).
