Westmont College Edges Chapman in Final Seconds

Shawn Stuerman hit two free throws with 14 seconds to play to give Westmont College a 69-68, nonconference win over Chapman Tuesday night in Santa Barbara.

Stuerman’s free throws gave Westmont a 69-66 lead. Chapman guard Mike Kelly hit a jump shot with five seconds to play cut the lead to 69-68, but Chapman ran out of time in a frantic, second-half comeback. The Panthers trailed by 11 points with 15:11 to play, but outscored Westmont, 24-12, over the next 10 minutes to make it close. The lead changed hands four times in the last four minutes.

Darryl Jones and Jon Freeman had 18 points each to lead Westmont to its 45th straight win at home. Freeman scored 12 points in the second half to help Westmont (4-2) hold off the Chapman rally.

Jim Saia led three Chapman players in double figures with 16 points. The Panthers (3-5) shot 52% from the field, including 64% in the second half.

In women’s nonconference action:

Southern California College 87, Christ College 45--Sophomore forward Kim Nidey had 20 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists to lead the Vanguards to the win in Irvine. Angela Smith added 16 points for SCC (2-3). Christ College falls to 0-4.
