Former teammates will deliver the eulogy and flags will fly at half staff in North Dakota Thursday in honor of Roger Maris, the record-breaking home run hitter who died Saturday of lymphatic cancer.
Mickey Mantle, a former New York Yankee teammate of Maris, is expected to take part in funeral services at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Fargo. Gov. George Sinner, who will attend the funeral, ordered the flags at half staff.
Maris, 51, who hit 61 home runs in 1961 to break Babe Ruth’s record, grew up in Fargo.
