Girls’ Basketball : Legaux Leads Villa Park Over Savanna

The Villa Park girls’ basketball team defeated Savanna, 62-43, in the second round of the the Savanna Tournament Tuesday at Savanna.

Villa Park’s Lynn Legaux led all scorers with 19 points. Kelly Stephenson added 16 points and Suzie Barnett 13 points for the Spartans.

Vennetta Dorlis had 17 points for the Rebels.

The Spartans (2-0) meet Edison in the tournament final. Savanna fell to 3-3.

In other Savanna Tournament action:

Edison 77, Don Lugo 65--The Chargers won by 12 points in this second-round game. Denise Ogburn led the Chargers with 17 points and Kristen Wilson added 15 points and 13 rebounds to the Charger attack. Edison advances to meet Villa Park in the final.

Mater Dei 72, Irvine 47--The Monarchs coasted in this second-round game as every player on their roster scored. Geri Gainey and Kim Ellerman led the Monarchs with 16 points apiece. Shelly Moceri scored 17 points for the Vaqueros. Mater Dei raised its record to 7-2.

In the Garden Grove Tournament:

El Toro 62, Magnolia 48--The Chargers advanced to Saturday’s final by downing the Sentinels in a third-round game at Garden Grove. Magnolia’s Michelle Carter led all scorers with 30 points and Dawn Borum added 16 for the Sentinels. Magnolia fell to 4-2.

Costa Mesa 57, Rowland 31--Carol Long scored 15 points to lead the Mustang attack in a fifth-place semifinal game. Julie Garcia scored 16 points for the Raiders, with 14 of those coming in the first half. Costa Mesa raised its record to 2-3.

In Empire League action:

El Dorado 70, Kennedy 36--The Golden Hawks opened league play with an easy win at Kennedy. Jill Matyuch led El Dorado with 29 points. Cathy Newvine added 24 points and 13 rebounds for the Golden Hawks. Ursula Lovely scored 21 points for Kennedy. El Dorado (1-0 and 6-1) is at Katella Thursday. Kennedy meets Valencia in the Canyon Tournament.

Esperanza 52, Cypress 25--Sharon Warmus scored 17 points to lead the Aztecs to an easy win over the Centurions at Cypress.

In nonleague action:

Fountain Valley 58, Long Beach Poly 41--Melissa Handley scored 15 points and Dawn Lawler added 11 points to lead the Barons to the win at Fountain Valley Tuesday. Fountain Valley (6-1) hosts Compton Saturday.

Santa Ana Valley 47, Saddleback 22--Tamiko Bell scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Falcons to the win over rival Roadrunners at Valley.
