Iowa quarterback Chuck Long, runner-up to Auburn’s Bo Jackson in the closest Heisman Trophy vote ever, was named by the Maxwell Football Club in Philadelphia as the nation’s best 1985 college football player.
“It’s the next-best thing to the Heisman Trophy,” said Long, after learning that 900 voters had given him the 49th annual award by a margin of nearly 2-1 over Jackson. Miami quarterback Vinny Testaverde was third.
