Area Roundup : Dons Lose in Semifinal, 95-77, Play Hornets for 3rd

Forward Mike Brown scored 37 points to lead L.A. Trade Tech past Rancho Santiago, 95-77, in a semifinal game of the Rancho Santiago Tournament Friday night.

The win sends Trade Tech (7-6) to today’s final against Santa Monica. Rancho Santiago will meet Fullerton at 5 p.m. for third place.

Brown also grabbed eight rebounds and had five assists in handing the Dons their third loss 14 games this season. Mark Moses and Howard Cole led the Dons with 17 and 16 points, respectively.

Santa Monica 96, Fullerton 87--The Corsairs shot 66% from the field in the second half, making 27 of 41 field-goal attempts, for their come-from-behind victory in the semifinals at Rancho Santiago College. Santa Monica had trailed, 39-33, at halftime.

The Corsairs were led by Jessie Nash, who scored 27 points, and Al Fields, who added 20 points. The Hornets were led by Rocco Meyers’ 21 points, Steve Snow’s 17 points and Bill Buda’s 16 points. Santa Monica will play for the championship at 7 tonight, while Fullerton will play for third place at 5.

L.A. Valley 74, Allan Hancock 70--Robin Andrews scored 18 points and Fred Lewis added 15 points to lead the Monarchs past the Bulldogs in the consolation semifinals. L.A. Valley will meet L.A. Pierce for the consolation championship today. Tony Regueira scored 27 points and Sherman Vernon added 22 to lead Hancock.

L.A. Pierce 93, San Bernardino Valley 63--Andy Jercha scored a game-high 24 points and Tony Thomas added 21 points as the Brahmas defeated the Indians in the consolation semifinals.

In College of the Desert Tournament action:

Golden West 71, George AFB 71--Sophomore guard Bryon Strachan scored 27 points to lead the Rustlers into the championship semifinals of tonight. Kevin Smith 20 points for Golden West (3-6) while J.T. Debbs scored 10 to go with his 13 rebounds.

Cypress 85, L.A. City 66--Scott Swanner made 7 of 9 shots from the field and 10 of 13 from the line and finished with 24 points to lead the Chargers to the win in the opening round at Cypress College. Paul Horn added 19 points and 14 rebounds, and Bill Dobbs had 13 points for the Chargers (9-4).

Cypress will play L.A. Harbor, which defeated Antelope Valley, 68-54, Friday night, in tonight’s championship game.

Imperial Valley 64, Orange Coast 61 (OT)--Behind 61-60 in overtime, an 18-footer by OCC’s Jon Johnston missed its mark, Imperial Valley rebounded, was fouled, and made two free throws for the final margin of victory.

The Pirates had been up by 13 points early in the game, but foul trouble kept 6-10 center Joe Seager on the bench, allowing Imperial Valley to come back and take the lead. OCC’s Chuck McGavran hit a 20-footer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. OCC (6-6) meets San Diego Mesa for third place this afternoon.
