Boys’ and Girls’ Roundup : Valhalla Does About Face for 3rd Place

Valhalla High School was winless in its first four games, but the Norsemen turned it around in this week’s 39th annual Kiwanis Tournament. They won three of four games, including a 50-46 decision over Mount Miguel Saturday at Hoover High School, to capture third place in the Limited Division.

Dan Chase scored 15 Saturday to lead Valhalla. Dominic Taitano scored 13 and Brian Dindinger added 10. Mount Miguel’s Mike Flores led all scorers with 17.

The Norsemen trailed, 14-12, after the first quarter but rallied to take a 24-21 lead at halftime. They never trailed in the second half and led by as many as 11.

Unlimited Division

Madison 54, Mount Carmel 48--Eric Jackson scored 15 to lead Madison (5-2) to the consolation title at Serra High. The Warhawks took a 10-4 lead in the first quarter and were never headed. DaRell Watson scored 13 and Maurice Jackson added 11 for Madison. Scott Boggins scored 14 for Mount Carmel.

Limited Division

University 60, Kearny 45--Sean Giles scored 21 points and James Wilson added 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Dons (6-3) past the Komets in the consolation championship game at Serra High. University led at the half, 26-16, but Kearny came back to take a 31-30 lead after three quarters. But Giles and Wilson led a 30-14 University run in the fourth quarter.

Hilltop 60, Orange Glen 58--David Mossman scored 19, including three clutch free throws in the final seconds, to enable Hilltop (6-6) to preserve the win at Hoover High. Hilltop led at halftime, 31-24, and after third quarters, 45-38, before Orange Glen rallied. Judd Rachow added 12 points, 15 rebounds and 5 blocked shots for Hilltop. Cory Kelly led Orange Glen with 18 points.

GIRLS

La Jolla 52, Serra 42--Colie Anderson scored 21 and Brigid Evans added 18 as La Jolla won the consolation title in the Eighth Warhawks-Coca Cola Tournament at Madison High. The Vikings (5-2) raced to a 22-8 in the first quarter and were never threatened.

Crawford 68, Sweetwater 48--The Colts evened their record at 4-4 while winning third place in the consolation division of the Third Lancer-Optimist Tournament at Hilltop High. Shawn Reddic led Crawford with 27 points. Carmela Hicks scored 21 and Terri Butler added 10.
