Santa Ana : Girl, 10, Killed; Family Hurt in Car Collision

A 10-year-old girl was killed and her three siblings and their mother were injured when their car, bound for school, collided with another vehicle Monday morning, Santa Ana police said.

Aracely Heredia of Santa Ana was killed on impact in the collision at Fairview and Willits streets.

Santa Ana police said the accident occurred as the girl’s mother, Consuelo Rios, 33, was driving southbound on Fairview to drop off her children at local schools. Rios collided with a northbound car, driven by Benito Torrez, 23, of Santa Ana, as Rios turned left onto Willits, police said.

Rios, her children and Torrez were all transported to Fountain Valley Regional Hospital.

Police said Elizabeth Heredia, 8, suffered internal injuries, including a lacerated liver, and a hospital spokeswoman said the child was in critical condition. Salvador Heredia, 4, sustained a broken pelvis and fractured arm and was listed in stable condition. Fernando Heredia, 8 months old, was admitted for observation with minor injuries and later released, police and hospital officials said.

Their mother was listed in stable condition, with broken ribs and facial and chest lacerations, police and hospital officials said. Torrez was treated and released.

Civilian traffic investigator Gayle Maas said no citations were issued at the scene and the investigation is continuing.
