Prep Basketball Roundup : Rancho Alamitos Beats Irvine, 66-61, as Morales, Carter Combine for 42

Randy Morales scored 22 points and Roger Carter added 20 to lead the Rancho Alamitos High School boys’ basketball team to a 66-61 nonleague victory over Irvine Monday night in Irvine.

Rancho Alamitos made 20 of 32 free throws, and Irvine went to the line 14 times and came away with only 7 points.

Irvine’s Mike Herring scored 25 points and had 10 rebounds before fouling out in the last 32 seconds. Matt Norton added 11 points and Brian Snoddy had 10 for Irvine (8-7). Irvine opens South Coast League play at Laguna Hills Wednesday.

In other nonleague action:

Muir 45, Fountain Valley 37--The Mustangs improved their record to 14-1 by outrebounding the shorter Barons, 31-17, at Fountain Valley. Baron forward Scott Wessler led all scorers with 15 points, followed by the Mustangs’ Stacey Augman (12) and Wayne Womack (11). Fountain Valley guard Todd Hanson had eight points, four steals and five assists. The Barons (9-6) will open their Sunset League season at home Friday against Ocean View.

Bolsa Grande 71, Mira Costa 60--The Matadors (7-4) had a strong second half to beat the Mustangs at Mira Costa. Bolsa Grande forward Hung Nguyen was the high scorer with 18 points. Center Tom Afdahl had 15 points and 11 rebounds, guard Nam Cao had 14 points and 12 assists and Joe Small added 12 points. The Matadors play host to Long Beach Wilson tonight.

In girls nonleague action:

La Habra 54, La Mirada 43--Forward Robin Seabrook scored 24 points and had 13 rebounds as the Highlanders (8-4) won at La Habra. Center Adele Alvarez added 12 points and 11 rebounds and sophomore forward Michelle Reeves had nine rebounds against the Matadors (7-4). Highlander guards Deanna Stafford and Bridgette Austin combined for 11 assists and six steals. La Habra plays at Valencia at 4:30 p.m. today.
