Girls’ Roundup : Sargeant Scores 25 as Orange Defeats Canyon, 39-34

Suzette Sargeant scored 25 points Tuesday night, including 11 in the third quarter, to lead Orange High School to a 39-34 win over Canyon in the Century League opener played in the Comanches’ gym.

The Panthers trailed, 19-14, at halftime but outscored the Comanches, 17-6, in the third quarter to take the lead. Canyon was led by Angie Nelson, who scored 10 points and grabbed 19 rebounds.

In other Century League action:

Foothill 71, Santa Ana 9--Though she played about two quarters, Chris McFerson scored 11 points to lead the Knights to an easy league-opening win over the Saints at Santa Ana High. Sue Davis added 10 points and Stephanie Fleischaker had 13 rebounds for Foothill (11-1).

In Sea View League action:

Corona del Mar 41, Newport Harbor 28--K.C. Jones scored 19 points and had 9 rebounds, and Michelle Willard, a 6-foot 1-inch center, grabbed 23 rebounds and blocked 7 shots to help the Sea Kings (2-0 league, 5-7 overall) defeat the Sailors at Newport Harbor High. Chantel Deford led the Sailors with 10 points.

Saddleback 47, Costa Mesa 38--Monica Walton scored 22 points and Kriston Cook added 16 points to lead the Roadrunners past the Mustangs at Costa Mesa High. Saddleback improves to 2-0 in league and 2-6 overall. Suzanna Cowley scored 12 points and Carol Long had 10 points for Costa Mesa, which dropped to 1-1 and 6-6.

Woodbridge 58, Laguna Beach 28--Jill Daniels, a 5-11 senior forward, scored 25 points on 12 of 16 from the field and had 21 rebounds and Kathy Millat, a 5-8 sophomore forward, scored 14 points to lead the Warriors (2-0, 8-5).

In Empire League action:

El Dorado 66, Loara 35--Jill Matyuch scored 20 points and Kathy Newvine added 18 points to lead the Golden Hawks past the Saxons at El Dorado High for their third straight league victory. El Dorado improves to 3-0 in league and 8-1 overall, while Loara, which was led by Carolyn Osato’s 20 points, dropped to 0-3 in league.

Katella 63, Kennedy 27--Kelly Johnson and Julie Ramierez each scored 12 points to lead the Knights past the Irish at Kennedy High.

Esperanza 79, Pacifica 15--Sharon Warmus scored 32 points to lead the Aztecs (3-0 in league, 10-3 overall) to an easy win over the Mariners at Pacifica High.

In South Coast League action:

El Toro 58, Capistrano Valley 30--Kathy Nickel scored 17 points, while Elaine Youngs scored 15 points, as the Chargers defeated the Cougars in the league opener at Capistrano Valley High. Kaylen Combs led the Cougars (7-3) with 12 points.

Mission Viejo 80, San Clemente 23--Laurie Totosz scored 23 points and Michelle Reid added 17 points, as the Diablos easily defeated the Tritons at San Clemente High.

Irvine 49, Laguna Hills 36--The Vaqueros outscored the Hawks, 10-4, in the third quarter to break open the game. Irvine was led by Dana Tanikawa, who scored 12, and Shelly Moceri, who had 11. Julie Monaghan scored 10 for Laguna Hills.

In Angelus League action:

Mater Dei 74, St. Paul 43--Geri Gainey scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Monarchs past the Swordsmen in the league opener at St. Paul High. Mater Dei improves to 11-5 overall.

In Olympic League action:

Ontario Christian 64, Orange Lutheran 36--Wendy Hobbs scored 16 points, as the Knights opened league play with a win over the Lancers at Ontario Christian High. Orange Lutheran (4-4) was led by Michelle Boltz, who scored 11 points and had 8 assists.

In nonleague action:

Magnolia 77, Buena Park 52--Michelle Carter, who twice scored 50 points in games last year, scored 41 points to lead the Sentinels over the Coyotes at Magnolia High. Dawne Borum added 20 points for the Sentinels (8-4), while Kelly Hilliard scored 19 points for Buena Park (3-6).

Fullerton 59, Western 50--Three Indians scored in double figures--Heidi Shikuma (19 points), Vicki Silvia (12 points) and Sabrena Welch (10 points and 13 rebounds)--to offset Pioneers forward Melanie Williams, who scored 21 points, as Fullerton (8-4) defeated Western (0-8) in the Indians’ gym.

Savanna 47, Troy 39--Najla Koury and Venetta Dorlis each scored 16 points to lead the Rebels to a win over the Warriors at Savanna High. Tammy Burns grabbed 15 rebounds for the Rebels (6-7), while Jennifer McCartney led Troy with 12 points.

La Habra 67, Valencia 53--Robin Seabrook scored 23 points and grabbed 8 rebounds to lead the Highlanders past the Tigers at Valencia High. Deanna Stafford added 16 points and 7 assists and Adele Alvarez had 13 points and 12 rebounds for La Habra, which improves to 9-4. Valencia (8-2) was led by Ronette McWeeney, who scored 18 points.

Ocean View 67, Long Beach Poly 54--Trina Vlachos scored 24 points and Teri Zanelli added 15 points to lead the Seahawks (9-5) past the Jackrabbits at Ocean View High. The Seahawks played without point guard Dana Douty, who is out with a badly bruised knee.

Marina 51, Long Beach Wilson 32--The Vikings were led by 6-1 sophomore center Dawn Charroin, who had 18 points and 9 rebounds. Point guard Heather Kirkup added 10 points. Marina (10-4) led 24-6 at halftime with Kirkup scoring 8 points and Charroin adding 7.
